Fall brings a natural change of pace. The days get shorter, temperatures start to drop and there’s a little more reason to enjoy a slower evening after a busy day.
You don’t have to completely change your routine to make the most of it. A few simple habits can make your evenings more enjoyable while giving you time to recharge and reset.
Make Dinner Part of the Routine
Cooler weather is a good excuse to bring some of your favorite meals back into the rotation. Soup, chili, pasta, tacos or a simple meal on the grill can all make dinner something to look forward to.
Cooking at home can also make weeknights easier. Make enough for leftovers and you’ve already taken care of another meal later in the week.
Get Outside While You Can
The cooler weather makes it easier to spend time outside, whether that means going for a walk, taking the dog out, playing a sport or meeting up with friends.
You don’t need to plan a full activity. Even 20 or 30 minutes outside can be a good way to break up the workday and get some fresh air.
Find Your Evening Wind-Down
After work, school or whatever fills your day, give yourself some time to switch gears. That could mean hitting the gym, making dinner, playing video games, reading, watching a game or catching up with friends.
There’s no right way to spend your downtime. The important part is having something that helps you step away from the day’s responsibilities.
Put Your Phone Down for a Bit
It’s easy to spend an entire evening scrolling without really feeling like you did anything. Try setting your phone aside for part of the night and doing something else instead.
Work on a hobby, cook, listen to music, play a game or just hang out. Even a little less screen time can make your evening feel longer.
Get a Head Start on Tomorrow
A few minutes of preparation at night can make the next morning easier. Pack your bag, get your clothes ready, clean up your space or take care of something you know you’ll need tomorrow.
It doesn’t have to become another chore. Just knock out a couple of small things so you can start the next day without immediately playing catch-up.
Leave Some Nights Unplanned
Fall can get busy quickly with football games, concerts, holidays, weekends out and everything else on the calendar. Make sure you leave some nights open, too.
An unplanned evening gives you the flexibility to do whatever sounds good, whether that’s going out, staying in or catching up on things around the house.
Set the Pace for Fall
The best fall routine isn’t about following a specific schedule. It’s about finding a balance between getting things done, staying active and having time to yourself.
Make a good meal, throw on a sweater when it gets cold and enjoy the extra time in your evening. Sometimes, keeping things simple is the best way to enjoy the season.
