Top 10 Camping Essentials

Spend some time in the great outdoors this summer by going on a camping trip! There’s no better way to experience nature than by going to the woods, taking in the fresh air, and taking a break from everyday life. In no particular order, here are the top 10 camping essentials you’ll need before embarking on your journey!

1. Tent

Unless you want to rough it by sleeping on the ground, a tent is necessary for a comfortable camping experience. Protect yourself from the elements while still getting a glimpse of the night sky with an easy-to-set-up tent!

2. Sleeping Bag

Sleeping bags will keep you warm at night without forcing you to use the good blankets you have at home. However, make sure to research what sleeping bag you need as not everyone is equal. Sleeping bags have a ratings scale based on the temperature, time of year, and climate you’ll be sleeping in. For more info on how to pick the perfect one, check out this handy article here.

3. Fire/Heat

Keep bugs away, stay warm, and roast marshmallows by setting up a fire pit at your campsite. This provides you with a heat source that makes for a great conversation area for you and all your friends! Before starting a fire, please learn and understand when and where to start one as well as how to properly put one out.

4. Food

Most campsites aren’t down the road from a Walmart. Stock up and bring along plenty of food for your trip. Camping staples include hot dogs, eggs, chili, burgers, and desserts like cookies and s’mores! Most campsites have grill stations so any meat you can cook is perfect. If you want to cook something ahead of time, try this s’mores casserole recipe we found that we know you’ll enjoy!

5. Bug Repellent Spray

Fend off those pesky insects by bringing bug-repellent spray. Don’t s[end the next week caring for bug bite wounds you went home with and avoid any potential illnesses all at the same time!

6. Outdoor Fun

Getting away to a campsite is a relaxing way to unwind, but you can bring many different things to have fun. This is the perfect time to catch up on your summer reading, work on your poker skills, or set up a fun outdoor movie theatre using nothing but an old sheet and a projector!

7. Flashlights

Flashlights will show you where you are going and what’s around you once the sun goes down. While it’s nice to be out among the stars and away from the bright city lights, the darkness from the outdoors can bring along many dangers and unwanted furry friends. Flashlights and floodlights around your campground will help keep them away and give you a view of your surroundings.

8. First Aid Kit

Prepare for any and all emergencies for your trip. Bring a well-packed first aid kit with bandages, cold packs, and antiseptic wipes. Tell friends and relatives where you will be camping and when you should be expected to be home. If anything unfortunate happens to you, they will know and get you help. For a complete list of what your first aid should consist of, check out this article from the Red Cross!

9. Cooler

Bringing a cooler ensures that your food and water are properly cooled and stay away from the elements and wildlife. Without ice to keep them cool, meats will quickly spoil and become inedible if not stored properly.

10. Water

Probably the most important item to bring, water is essential to your health and well-being. Humans can only go 3 days without water, giving this the utmost importance over everything else. Find a campground near a natural water source and know what’s safe to drink and what you should avoid.

These camping essentials are important to having a fun camping trip. Be sure to pack the essentials and be prepared for what you might need. Most importantly, be safe and have a good time!
